Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time she already had made her television debut in an episode from 1991 in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
